Sure your box is tough, but it's not indestructible. Mine has been blown up at least five times in one year with sparkler bombs (twenty or so sparklers bound tightly with duct tape). It's no wimpy M80 it's closer to a stick of dynamite.
The effect of one of these little bastards on your mailbox is a warped chunk of steel similar to a mailbox with a door that won't close because of the distortion to the body and the bent hinge.
How about starting with your 10 ga. box. Add 1" x 1/8" horseshoe shaped gussets welded at 1" intervals to the outside. finish with a 10 ga. exterior. For a door use 1/4" steel and a real hinge with a 3/8" pin. If you really want to go nuts add a blow out rear panel on a short chain or a baffle system to expel the blast.
I am really serious about this. I'm tired of having to remove my box and straighten it out in the press. I need a box that is reallyindestructible!
These people really are defensive about their mailboxes.
